Will Amending a Tax Return Trigger an Audit?

Amending a return does not automatically trigger an audit, though the IRS looks harder at some changes than others.

Does Filing an Amended Return Increase Audit Risk?

If you file Form 1040-X to amend your return, the IRS does not audit you for that alone. The IRS processes amended returns for changes as simple as:

  • Correcting filing status
  • Adding missed deductions or credits
  • Reporting overlooked income
  • Fixing math or reporting errors

The IRS expects taxpayers to correct mistakes, and filing an amended return is how you do it, including when you owe more tax as a result.

When an Amended Return Might Trigger an Audit

While amending a return isn’t inherently risky, the IRS screens amended returns separately and may select one for audit. A refund is not necessarily a trigger. You draw more attention with:

Large or Unusual Refund Claims:
If you claim a significantly higher refund on the amended return, the IRS may ask you to support it.
Big Changes to Income:
If you add or remove major income items, like forgotten 1099s, stock sales or contractor payments, the IRS may verify them.
Questionable or Unsupported Deductions:
The IRS may question large business expenses, charitable contributions or real estate losses that you cannot document.
Multiple Amended Returns:
If you file amendments year after year, the IRS may question the accuracy of your returns.
Changes in Credits or Dependents:
The IRS reviews adjustments to child-related credits, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or education credits closely.

Benefits of Filing an Accurate Amendment

Filing an accurate amendment is safer than leaving errors uncorrected. Amending can:

  • Limit interest and penalties by paying any balance sooner

  • Demonstrate good-faith compliance

  • Limit future IRS issues

What Form 1040-X is, and how you file it

What it corrects.

You use Form 1040-X to correct a previously filed return in the Form 1040 series, or to change amounts the IRS already adjusted. You file one when you need to change your filing status, income, deductions, credits or tax liability.

When you can e-file it.

You can amend a Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR or 1040-SS electronically, for the current tax period or the two before it, and up to three times per tax year. You attach no Form 1040-X to a corrected Form 1040-SS. You send older years on paper.

Getting the refund faster.

On an e-filed 1040-X you can choose direct deposit and enter your bank details. On a paper 1040-X you wait for a check.

You need no amendment for some errors: the IRS corrects certain mistakes itself and accepts returns missing some forms or schedules, so check before you file.

How long you have to amend, and how long the IRS takes

You work to two IRS timeframes on an amended return, one before you file and one after. Neither one changes your amended return audit risk, and you plan around both:

Form 1040-X: two clocks

IRS timeframes, Topic no. 308

Clock 1: the deadlineTo claim a refund, file within 3 years after you filed or 2 years after you paid, whichever is later. Special rules apply to some refund claims, so check the form instructions.CLOCK 1: THE DEADLINETo claim a refund, file within3 yearsafter you filed2 yearsafter you paidorwhichever is later. If the deadline is close, file Form 1040-X with the updated return and the forms and schedules the IRS asks for.

Does an amended return extend the IRS audit window

Only when it shows more tax, and only for that tax. The rule is IRC 6501(c)(7). If the IRS receives your amended return showing additional income tax in the last 60 days before its assessment period ends, it has 60 days from receipt to assess that amount.

  • The IRS gets no extension for the rest of the return.
  • The IRS gets no extension from a refund claim.
  • The IRS gets the extension for income tax only.
  • The IRS counts the day it receives the return, so send it early enough that the IRS has it inside the period.

Worked example, assuming a 2023 return filed on its April 15, 2024 due date:

Assessment period endsApril 15, 2027

How to check your amended return status

The IRS tracks an amended return separately from an original one, in a tool called Where's My Amended Return:

  • When to look.

Check the tool, or call 866-464-2050, about three weeks after you submit the amendment.

  • What you need.

Your Social Security number, your date of birth and your ZIP code.

  • Years covered.

The IRS provides status for the current tax year and three prior tax years, in English and Spanish.

  • What the IRS excludes.

Business returns and returns with a foreign address.

If you see nothing after three weeks, follow the instructions on screen. The IRS will contact you if it needs more from you.

How to Handle an Amendment Safely

When you amend a tax return, the IRS does not change how it selects your original return for audit. As long as your amendment is accurate, consistent, and supported by documentation, correcting your return is usually the better course. If your changes are complex or involve large adjustments, a tax professional can help you file the amendment correctly.
